Gillian Calvert AO has been a passionate and influential advocate for children for over forty years. She was Australia’s first Children’s Commissioner, serving as the inaugural New South Wales Commissioner for Children and Young People from 1999 to 2009. During her tenure, she established the Commission as one of Australia’s leading children’s policy and research centres, firmly grounded in child-centred and child-inclusive approaches.
Before this, Gillian played a pivotal role in coordinating whole-of-government action for children, with a particular focus on the importance of early childhood development. She was instrumental in breaking the silence around child sexual assault, leading the NSW Child Protection Council to develop a collaborative and comprehensive approach to tackling child abuse and neglect.
Gillian began her career as a family therapist, working closely with troubled children and their families. This experience laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to listening to children and placing their wellbeing at the heart of policy and practice.
Beyond government, Gillian has provided leadership across the human services sector, including significant contributions to the non-government sector. As a member of the Board of Life Without Barriers, she has been a driving force in reshaping how the Board stewards its practice, introducing a new Care Governance approach for organisations that care for vulnerable people.
In recognition of her outstanding service to the community, Gillian was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2009 for her advocacy in protecting the rights and welfare of children and young people.
