Answer to 2025 Week 1 Question: I was born in 1987, my childhood hugging the poverty line, knowing many who have been worse off the us. Imagine if instead of excuses, blaming each other, saying “well we did it and we’re fine” and we worked together to “go okay, let’s try.”

Join us for the annual George Briscoe Kerferd Oration, a free community event first held in 2003 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the naming of Beechworth. Held in Victoria’s beautiful Indigo Shire, the Oration honours the legacy of George Briscoe Kerferd (1831–1889)—an energetic community leader, Premier of Victoria, and Judge of the Supreme Court.
Each year, an eminent speaker is invited to challenge our thinking, foster meaningful discussion, and promote active citizenship.
In 2025, we welcome Gillian Calvert AO—a leading advocate for children and families for over 40 years. As Australia’s first Children’s Commissioner, Gillian established the NSW Commission for Children and Young People as an internationally recognised voice for child-centred and inclusive policy. Her work spans leadership in public service, academia, and not-for-profit governance across sectors including housing, disability, aged care and refugee support.
In recognition of her lifelong dedication, Gillian was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2009.
The Oration is proudly sponsored by Indigo Shire Council, BankWAW, and Quercus Beechworth.
